Death Toll
In the 20th century neither Hitler or Stalin held the highest death toll, it was Mao Zedong who had a death toll of about 65 million Chinese people. Mao did this because he was attempting to create a new "socialist" China. Anyone who dared to stand in his way of doing so was executed or suffered a violent death. A combination of deadly lies about grain production, farming methods and misdistribution of food caused the worst famine in the human history. From 1959 - 1961, starvation killed around 30 - 40 million people; that's about the population size in California.
